The Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari: Elegance and Innovation

In a groundbreaking collaboration between Richard Mille and Ferrari, the unveiling of the RM UP-01 Ferrari took the horology world by surprise at the automotive marque’s headquarters in Maranello, Italy. This exceptional timepiece, marked by its radical departure from the typical Richard Mille design, stands as a testament to innovation and precision in the world of luxury watches.

A Departure from Tradition:

The RM UP-01 Ferrari sets itself apart with its remarkable thinness, earning the designation UP, derived from Ultra Plat (French for "ultra flat"). At an astonishing 1.75mm thickness, comparable to that of a compact disc, it surpasses the previous record holder, Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Ultra. This remarkable achievement, however, comes at a price – a jaw-dropping $1.88 million, in keeping with Richard Mille's reputation for crafting outrageously expensive timepieces.

Engineering Marvel:

To attain the title of the world's thinnest watch, Richard Mille's engineers made significant design adjustments. The iconic tonneau shape was turned on its side, allowing for a flatter movement. The result is a 1.18mm thick movement that weighs merely 2.82 grams. The entire watch, including the strap, weighs a feather-light 30 grams, emphasizing the brand's commitment to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking.

Innovative Crown System:

Intriguingly, the RM UP-01 Ferrari features a dual-crown system. Traditional crown mechanisms were deemed too thick, leading to the integration of two crowns – one for winding and the other for setting. Both crowns are adorned with black ceramic inserts, providing durability and protecting the bezel from wear. A laser-engraved black cavallino, Ferrari's iconic prancing horse, adorns the right side, paying homage to the automotive marque.

Collaborative Development:

The RM UP-01 Ferrari, limited to just 150 pieces, was conceived as an idea five years ago, with the bulk of development occurring over the past two and a half years. The collaboration with Ferrari was solidified in January 2021, resulting in the creation of numerous prototypes and over 6,000 hours of development and laboratory testing. The celebration took place at Ferrari's Fiorano circuit, underscoring the profound connection between Richard Mille and motorsport.

Precision Craftsmanship:

Partnering with specialists at Audemars Piguet Le Locle, the engineers aimed to enhance shock resistance by placing the movement inside the case rather than utilizing the case back as a baseplate. Tolerances are so precise that the cases are machined on the same equipment used for the movement. The two sapphire crystals, showcasing the time display and regulating organ, have been minimized to a thickness of two-tenths of a millimeter.

Exhaustive Testing:

The RM UP-01 Ferrari underwent extensive testing to ensure durability. Tests included attaching 12-kilogram weights to the strap to assess its resistance to stress, a 10-year accelerated aging of parts, water resistance to 10 meters, torsional and flex tests, and rigorous shock resistance evaluations exceeding 5,000 Gs using the Charpy Impact test.

Shared Values:

Ferrari and Richard Mille share common values, including an obsession with efficiency, technical prowess, and a dedicated fan base. The collaboration reflects their commitment to handcrafted precision and independence, making the RM UP-01 Ferrari a true testament to the fusion of elegance and innovation in the world of luxury watches.
